TAFE Outreach programs are closely aligned to the Federal Social Inclusion Agenda ensuring NSW education is accessible to people who face barriers to learning including geographical and social isolation, language and cultural factors, financial hardship, lack of educational confidence, being unaware of opportunities to learn, a disability or family commitments.

Teacher Qualities

The Qualities of the teacher involved with a group like Doorways are critical to the success of the program.  The main teacher on this course has a varied background and has a degree in Adult Education in VET / TESOL as well as a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and Certificate IV in Community Services.  Her past experience has included working with mental health, disabilities, drug and alcohol, literacy and numeracy, a contracted training co-ordinator, and a family support worker.  The combination of all these skills make her an excellent choice to facilitate a group like Warwick Farm's Doorways to the Future.

She is firm yet flexible, directive but consultative, able to negotiate with groups, job services and  the centre coordinator.  All of these skills have been necessary for the vision of the Doorways program to come to fruition.

A second teacher is teaching computers one day a week and is equally flexible in how she deals with students.  This allows the students to feel that they can achieve and be more engaged with learning a new skill.

A third teacher was involved in setting up the community garden which is at the rear of the facility used for Food 4 Life Market.  This gave students a great opportunity to learn skills that can be used in their own back yards and which could improve their attitudes to health.

Credit needs to be given to the marvellous Pat Hall, the Coordinator of the Neighbourhood Centre T Warwick Farm.  Pat is the backbone of the centre, the driver and liaison to all the community.  She is flexible and willing to try anything that will enable the community to grow.
